Ryanair will base six aircraft in the Canary Islands next summer and operate 112 routes, including 35 that are new

The new routes include: Leeds Bradford-Lanzarote; Doncaster-Tenerife; and Birmingham-Fuerteventura.

Ryanair said the expansion would increase its Canaries carryings from just 300,000 passengers in 2009 to 4.5m next year, and sustain over 4,500 local jobs, including 350 pilots, cabin crew and engineers.

The airline attributed the decision to expand to moves by the Islands’ Government and the Spanish Parliament to incentivise air traffic growth, including reducing airport charges for 2010 and 2011.

Spokesman Michael Cawley said: ‘Ryanair’s growth is directly attributable to the visionary initiatives of the Canary Islands Government who, in recent years, have identified low fare access as being critical, and have worked with Ryanair to reduce airport costs in order to return tourism to its previous 2007 record levels.

‘The announcement today of a 2013-2015 Regional Marketing Fund, in parallel with AENA’s 2011 cost incentives, has allowed the Canary Islands to deliver much lower airport costs and secure this largest ever investment by Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, in Spanish tourism.’

AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea) is the Spanish state-owned company that manages most of the country’s airports and its air traffic control.
